    Hormel Foods Corp. put on a burlesque and variety show in the heart of Sin City to promote four new flavors of bacon. The Nov. 6 Black Label Bacon Strip Show in Las Vegas was the brainchild of advertising agency BBDO's Minneapolis office. The company worked with Serino/Coyne, a New York City-based advertising agency that specializes in using live entertainment to push brands.

  • Major urban centres lead China's growing appetite for meat

    The country’s Ministry of Agriculture predicts Chinese are likely to consume 100 million tonnes (mt) of meat in 2020, while the domestic meat production capacity would be only about 90mt . Such a shortage is encouraging meat companies to invest heavily in the country. US meat producer Hormel Foods, for example, recently started building a new production plant in Jiaxing, Zhejiang province, on the east coast, despite China’s slowing economy. The US$350 million plant, which is expected to start operation by the end of 2016, will be the first Chinese plant to produce Hormel’s processed meat Spam, supplying retailers and foodservice outlets across China.

    Hormel and BBDO Minneapolis are staging a one-night-only Black Label Bacon Strip Show on Nov. 6 in Las Vegas with acrobats, music and "bacon burlesque dancers" named after four varieties of Hormel Black Label -- cherrywood, pecanwood, brown sugar and jalapeño. It's being touted as a Broadway-level production and is the brand's latest effort after 2013's first International Bacon Film Festival and last year's "Bacon-Fueled Motorcycle" and follow-up film festival.
