The unstoppable career of John Hernandez at Hormel Foods

If you ask John Hernandez how a career at Hormel Foods shaped his life, he won’t begin with his title or tenure. He’ll start with people — namely, the mentors who invested in his success and presented opportunities that challenged him along the way.

Hernandez is grateful: “I’ve been super, super fortunate to have managers that have focused on career trajectory, building skill, creating the right experiences, and really creating the safe place to kind of experiment, to learn, but then also to challenge myself.”

Hernandez joined Hormel Foods as an industrial engineer in 2008, analyzing workflows and optimizing processes at the Austin (Minnesota) Plant. That was his first role with the company. Today, he’s serving his 10th in 17 years. Now an assistant director of finance for Hormel Foods, Hernandez optimizes the company’s finances, translating market trends and performance data into clear, strategic guidance.

His career journey is a shining example of internal mobility done right. Since joining Hormel Foods, he’s ascended the ranks not because he followed a predetermined path, but because he had the vision and backing to create one for himself.

From Operations to Insights

Among the many dynamic career paths that take shape at Hormel Foods, Hernandez’s journey stands out as a powerful example of how cross-functional growth can fuel long-term success. Over the years, he has made impactful stops in engineering, operations, continuous improvement, marketing, and finance — a path defined less by titles and more by momentum. Each move had purpose, each chapter bestowing upon him new insight and new skills.

“Every role I’ve served here has presented me with new opportunities,” Hernandez said. “I wasn’t just switching jobs. I was building a broader understanding of how the business works.”

It all started on the operations floor, where Hernandez first learned the heartbeat of the company. Working in industrial engineering gave him visibility into how products were made, how teams collaborated, and how systems could be fine-tuned for efficiency. From there, he transitioned into roles that stretched his analytical thinking even further.

That journey eventually brought Hernandez to marketing — an admittedly uncommon destination for someone of Hernandez’s professional background, but in his case, it made sense. Hernandez wanted to see the business from the outside in, to expand his knowledge of how consumers experience brands and how smart, strategic insights can shape impactful strategy.

“Marketing at Hormel Foods is not just about brands. It’s about growth, it’s about strategic thinking, and John is someone who naturally excels in those areas,” said Lisa Selk, senior vice president of Brand Fuel at Hormel Foods. Selk worked directly with Hernandez during his years in marketing, offering guidance to someone she already recognized as a special talent.

“John is the type of person who asks great questions,” Selk continued. “He’s super curious and interested in what everyone else is doing, and that made him very successful in the marketing world. He’s willing to get his hands dirty and go the extra mile to understand the business at a deeper level.”

In marketing, Hernandez helped lead integrated media strategies that aligned brand campaigns with business goals. He applied the same analytical tools he’d used in engineering, this time to optimize strategies like budgeting media placement and measuring consumer resonance.

Beyond metrics, Hernandez brought a humble, inquisitive approach that set him up to thrive in a new field.

“John never came in like he had all the answers,” Selk said. “He wanted to learn from others. That humility, paired with his sharp thinking, helped him connect across teams in a really authentic way.”

Clarity in Complexity

Hernandez has a knack for tackling complex problems with a calm, steady hand. When a project needs focus and forward motion, he’s a team member that Hormel Foods stakeholders want at the helm.

“He’s a strategic thinker, but he’s also incredibly grounded,” said Nathan Annis, a years-long mentor to Hernandez and vice president of corporate development at Hormel Foods. “When you put John on a problem, you know it’s going to get solved, and it’s going to get solved in the right way. He’s not just checking boxes. He’s thinking deeply about what’s best for the business and for all the people involved.”

That kind of trust doesn’t happen overnight. It’s built over time, shaped by moments that matter. In 2024, Hernandez was asked to step away from his day-to-day finance role and spend two weeks focused on evaluating the company’s co-manufacturing partnerships from a business-unit perspective. In that short window, he pulled together a simple but powerful analysis that brought together supply chain and business-unit insights to pinpoint where co-manufacturing made the most sense. The result? A smarter, more strategic approach to decision-making — precisely what he was asked to deliver.

“He’s the kind of person who brings clarity to complexity,” Annis said. “If we’re dealing with something challenging, I want John in the room. He listens, he thinks, and when he speaks, it always moves the conversation forward.”

That steady presence has become a hallmark of Hernandez’s career. He’s not one to seek the spotlight, but when there’s a big challenge on the table, he’s often a person that company executives turn to — not because he’s the loudest voice, but because he’s consistently one of the most thoughtful.

Grounded and Giving

Hernandez finds the most meaning in the connections he builds — whether it’s coaching his kids’ teams, mentoring colleagues or supporting his community; the list goes on. He brings the same care and attention to every aspect of his life, and it’s that people-first approach that defines him as a leader and a person.

“I’ve always tried to be really intentional about how I show up for people,” Hernandez said. “Whether it’s at work or at home, I want to be present and consistent and make sure people know I’m in their corner.”

It’s a mindset shaped by his values, which come to life in everything he does.

Hernandez has spent years coaching youth sports, not just to stay connected with his three children, but to help build confidence and community in the next generation. Hernandez also helped launch Nuestra Gente, an employee resource group at Hormel Foods that celebrates Hispanic and Latino culture and creates space for authentic connection.

When you put John on a problem, you know it’s going to get solved, and it’s going to get solved in the right way.

No matter the context, Hernandez looks for ways to lift others up, just as so many others have done for him.

“I didn’t get here on my own,” Hernandez said. “So many people have taken the time to mentor me, to challenge me, to give me new opportunities. That’s why I try to do the same for others, to pay that forward.”

“I’ve learned just as much from John as he’s ever learned from me,” Annis said. “He brings such a grounded perspective. It’s been a privilege to watch him grow.”
