How Applegate’s Audrey Murphy orchestrates work and passion

Over her seven-year career at Hormel Foods, Audrey Murphy has worked in four Midwest cities, serving quality-assurance roles in each location. Ahead of each move, Murphy proactively vets one particular element of her impending destination.

“I love connecting with the local music scene,” said Murphy, food safety and quality engineer at Applegate. “A lot of places have a local community theater or a local ensemble to get involved with. That’s something I’m always on the lookout for.”

It’s about having something outside of work to look forward to and getting involved in the community.

Murphy is based today in Richfield, Minnesota, moonlighting as a pit-orchestra pianist and ensemble bassoonist. Just before her first day at Applegate, a Monday in November 2023, she attended a Friday-night rehearsal with the Richfield Community Band. “I joke that Hormel is my day job, and then in the evenings and weekends I have music going on, that’s my second job,” Murphy said.

Between working for Hormel Foods and pursuing her passion for music, she’s found an ideal balance: “It’s about having something outside of work to look forward to and getting involved in the community. I’m fortunate that everywhere I’ve lived, I’ve been able to do that with music.”

Embracing New Horizons

Community immersion comes naturally to Murphy, something evident not only to her fellow musicians, but also to her colleagues at Hormel Foods.

“Audrey has a unique ability to blend into any environment,” said Anna Breard, food safety and quality manager at Applegate. “She’s not just working in a new city; she’s actively finding ways to engage with the people around her, whether through food safety or music. She’s an example of how someone can manage both their career and their passions in such an enriching way.”

For Murphy, balancing her career with her musical pursuits leaves her feeling grounded and fulfilled. She thrives on the structure that comes with managing both worlds, even when it means hopping straight from one to the other.

“When the workday ends, I’m usually heading straight to rehearsal or band practice,” said Murphy, a 2018 graduate of the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University (CSBSJU), where she majored in both food science and piano performance. Murphy also played bassoon in the CSBSJU orchestra. She continues to play both.

Audrey’s approach to her work is one of the most admirable things about her … She is someone who is constantly looking for ways to improve, and her dedication really stands out.

“I’m often at the piano or the bassoon, especially on evenings and weekends,” Murphy said. “On a typical week, I’ll have at least one or two rehearsals with either the community band or a pit orchestra, and sometimes I’ll even squeeze in a performance. It’s a tight schedule, but it’s the balance I thrive on.”

Murphy flourishes in environments that challenge her, whether it’s navigating the complexities of a new role or adjusting to different team dynamics in a new city. Her ability to juggle a demanding career with her deep love of music is a testament to her stick-to-itiveness and personal drive.

“Audrey’s approach to her work is one of the most admirable things about her,” Breard said. “She’s incredibly driven and passionate about food safety and quality, and that enthusiasm carries over into everything she does. She’s detail-oriented, reliable, and always brings her best to the table, no matter the challenge. She is someone who is constantly looking for ways to improve, and her dedication really stands out.”

Like Wife, Like Husband

Murphy is not the only member of her household balancing what some might call a “hectic” lifestyle. Her husband, Sean, has a weeknight/weekend hobby of his own — hockey.

“His schedule is just as packed as mine,” said Audrey. “We’re always coordinating and figuring out how to fit everything in. He has early morning games or practices, and I’ll have a rehearsal that night, but we make it work. We’re both committed to our own passions, but we also understand that we need to give each other space to do those things.”

Sean Murphy is one of more than 3,000 registered players competing in Minnesota’s Adult Hockey Association, a statewide rec league offering nine tiers of competition and over 200 teams. Sean has played with the Boreal Hockey Club since 2021, which is no small commitment.

“A typical hectic week for us is a whirlwind of balancing work, practice, performances and making time for each other,” said Sean. “We work together to make sure things run smoothly, scheduling downtime and making sure we still get quality time together. It’s definitely challenging but also rewarding because we’re both fully committed to what we love.”

Watching Audrey do her thing both professionally and with music is amazing.

Though their calendars may be packed, Audrey and Sean both understand that the time they carve out for one another is crucial to making everything else work.

“Watching Audrey do her thing both professionally and with music is amazing,” said Sean. “She’s so dedicated and talented, and it’s inspiring to see her balance her career and passion with such grace. It speaks volumes about her work ethic, creativity, and resilience. I love supporting her and seeing her thrive, just like she supports me in my endeavors. We’re both invested in each other’s success and that makes the chaos worth it.”

“He’s my rock,” said Audrey. “Whether it’s helping with logistics or just being there to cheer me on, I wouldn’t be able to keep up with everything without his support.”

Empowered to Live Fulfilled

Audrey recognizes that maintaining balance between a demanding career and a passion-driven life requires a strong support system.

“Hormel Foods really understands the importance of balance,” Breard said. “Audrey, like many of us, is driven and passionate, but she also has a life outside of work. The company supports that, which makes it possible for people to truly give their best both in the office and in their personal lives.”

At Hormel Foods, I feel like I have the freedom to be the best version of myself, both at work and outside of it.

Murphy credits much of her success to the way Hormel Foods values its team members’ overall well-being. With the flexibility to manage her professional responsibilities while pursuing her musical passions, she feels empowered to dedicate herself fully to both.

“It’s a rare thing to find a company that not only understands your career ambitions but also supports your personal passions,” Murphy said. “At Hormel Foods, I feel like I have the freedom to be the best version of myself, both at work and outside of it.”
