APPLEGATE® breakfast offering ‘sticks’ the landing

It’s 7 a.m., and households across America are a flurry of activity, with breakfast often taking a back seat — or no seat at all — to the myriad of other tasks that need to be completed to get out the door in a hurry. But here’s the thing: It doesn’t have to be that way.

Enter the newest convenient breakfast solution from Applegate: pancake and chicken sausage on a stick. It’s tasty and portable.

Even more, it struck a sweet spot between familiar and fun, which helped grab the attention of Whole Foods, says Al Wunsch, senior innovation manager for Applegate. The high-end grocery chain known for its commitment to natural, organic and sustainable grocery items called the new APPLEGATE® item “unique and innovative” and Good Housekeeping dubbed it the No. 1 breakfast stick of the year — “a hit with parents and kids alike.”

That comes as little surprise to Nichole Jacko. As a senior sales strategy manager for Applegate, she studies the numbers. “There’s a continued demand for convenience and for protein … and a lot of households buy frozen breakfasts,” she says. Yet, many consumers believe the category is too processed.

That gave folks at Applegate an opportunity to stop and ask, “What value can we offer that doesn’t already exist?” The answer came quickly: Build on the breakfast sausage already in the lineup and use it as a component of a grab-and-go breakfast that checks all the boxes.

A member of the Hormel Foods family of brands, Applegate is on a mission: CHANGING THE MEAT WE EAT® – to bring a sharp focus on animal welfare, simple ingredients and environmental stewardship to meat categories that now cover all hours of the day. Breakfast and busyness tend to go hand in hand, so the company’s morning menu items stress convenience — but without compromising Applegate values.

“The proof is in the pancake,” Jacob Kim says cheekily. He’s a scientist who helped develop the newest APPLEGATE® product. As he explains, the center is a chicken sausage (there is a pork variation as well) that’s wrapped in a pancake pastry. The stick ensures portability and makes it fun. Overall, the portion size is slightly larger than the existing players’, but it nevertheless has more of what consumers want — and less of what they don’t.

It is not just pancakes of course; Applegate offers a variety of easy and delicious options that help everyone start the day with something tasty. From simple heat and eat frittata bites and hearty breakfast sandwiches to iconic breakfast favorites bacon and sausage, these quick choices make it easy to serve a satisfying breakfast without slowing down the morning.
