Applegate Farms, LLC., was founded by Stephen McDonnell and Chris Ely, who shared a passion for natural and organic meat products. The Applegate® brand grew to be the No. 1 brand in the natural and organic value-added prepared meats category. In 2015, Hormel Foods acquired Applegate Farms. The company operates autonomously as a standalone subsidiary in the company’s Refrigerated Foods segment.
Based in Benicia, Calif., CytoSport was founded in 1998 by the Pickett family, and produces Muscle Milk® products, the No. 1 brand in the ready-to-drink protein beverage category. CytoSport was acquired by Hormel Foods in 2014 and reports through the company's Specialty Foods segment.
Another wholly owned subsidiary, Dan's Prize, Inc., operates manufacturing plants in Long Prairie and Browerville, Minn. Dan's Prize was founded in 1986 by Dan Hitchcock, Jim Smith, Bob Uhlenkamp, Vern Noland and Ed Johnson. In 1991, Hormel Foods acquired Dan's Prize, which produces roast beef, corned beef, prime rib, pastrami, sliced meats, pot roast and other cooked meats for foodservice and deli operators.
Hormel Foods International Corp. (HFIC), a wholly owned subsidiary based in Austin, Minn., has established numerous joint venture and license agreements internationally in locations that include Australia, China, Denmark, England, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Panama, the Philippines and other nations. HFIC exports products to more than 60 countries.
Jennie-O Turkey Store, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary based in Willmar, Minn., is the nation's second largest producer of whole and processed turkey products sold to retail and foodservice outlets.
